Next you would use the curve generated with one of the above methods to create a RULED SURFACE that extends INTO the part enough to cut thru the wall thickness. (See my last blog on using this command in detail… ) This is exactly where you would most likely want to split this part so that it was moldable and didn’t get trapped in the mold (no undercuts).Īfter you hit OK, it will generate a CURVE that you can then use to make the surface you are going to split with.Īnother method to get this curve that would give you absolute control if you didn’t want it at the exact division between positive and negative draft would be the SPLIT LINE command with the SILHOUETTE option and adjusting the ANGLE setting. The key to getting this to put the parting line in the right spot is to use the “Split Faces” option! In this case we select the TOP plane to define the direction of pull.
One method to generate the curve to split with is to use the PARTING LINE command on the Mold Tools toolbar. But a lot of times getting the curve/surface/etc that you want to use to split/cut the part with is the hard part! The way around this is to drag the selection box from outside the outermost sketch. Keep in mind it is not possible to select sketches within the boundaries of other sketches using the selection box. By holding down the alt-key and hovering over the sketch, the user can quickly choose a contour/s and then open the extrude command with a shortcut icon appearing next to the sketch.
This is great feedback for users as they can immediately know the status of a sketch. In SOLIDWORKS 2017 a new time-saving setting call Shaded Sketch Contours has been introduced which makes any closed contour, shaded. If you tried to extrude this profile, you might get a rebuild error such as:Ī user wouldn’t know there was even a problem until they reached the extrusion command.
